Ambassador John F. Tefft hosted the U.S. Elections Breakfast at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 6:00am. The last polls closed on the West Coast of the United States at 8:00pm PST (6:00am in Kyiv). One room of the U.S. Embassy was transformed into Obama’s Democratic Campaign Headquarters with Chicago-themed breakfast and decorations. Another room was transformed into Romney’s Republican Campaign Headquarters with Boston-themed breakfast and decorations. Guests were able to cast their mock vote as they entered, watched the election results live on U.S. TV, and enjoyed breakfast. Over 200 Ukrainian guests from government, civil society, academia, the private sector, and the media attended the event.

Ambassador Tefft congratulated the American people for making their voice heard by voting. He noted that the presidential election had been very competitive, but that competition ensures that candidates listen and are responsive to the needs and desires of citizens. The Ambassador said that it is only from the votes of citizens that their leaders derive their legitimacy. Ambassador Tefft finished his remarks by stressing the commitment of the United States to the people of Ukraine and their democratic aspirations.
