Fourth of July (Independence Day)

Overview

The Fourth of July, or Independence Day as it is also known, celebrates the birth of our country as we know it today. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Although the holiday was first observed in 1776, it did not become a legal holiday until 1941. Traditionally, the 4th of July is celebrated in a public manner, with exciting parades, patriotic speeches, and displays of fireworks.

In addition to the public celebrations, many families across the country like to celebrate the holiday in a more personal way inviting friends and family to back-yard picnics and outings to sporting events.
